Anugerah Planet Muzik 2013, GLITZ, glamour and energy. That’s how one would describe the Anugerah Industri Muzik: Malaysian Indian 2013 awards ceremony held at the Setia City Convention Center, Shah Alam in Selangor last Saturday. It was a timely show to recognise the achievements in the local Indian music scene.

You also had some eye-opening scenes at the awards when homegrown Tamil hip hop and Tamil rock showed that the local Indian scene was not limited to pop-centred sounds.

The show, featuring 16 contestable categories, was hosted by THR Raaga radio announcer Aanantha Rajaram and actress Sangeeta Krishnasamy. Starting the night off strong were performers from Asthana Arts, with a lively dance routine filled with vibrant colours and upbeat music.

Following that were the first award presenters of the night – comedians Indi Nadarajah and Allan Perera, who handed out the best new artiste category.

Hashmitha Selvam with her Best Vocal Performance in a Song (Female) award.
Taking home the coveted AIM “mic stand” statue for that award was Vinesh Kumar Palani.

The glittering night, with 1,900 attendees, also saw special appearances by celebrities in the Malaysian-Indian community to present the awards.

Heading the list was the popular Chennai, India-based singer, P. Unnikrishnan, who also performed the song Ennavale, from hit Tamil blockbuster of the 1990s Kadhalan.

Other presenters on the night were pop celebrities Datuk David Arumugam, Datuk DJ Dave and Datin Sri Manimala NT Rajah.

Fans of pop star Jaclyn Victor, were disappointed, as despite being listed as one of the presenters in the programme schedule, she did not make it that night.

Also on hand to present awards were A.K Nathan, DCP Datuk Paramasivam and Mydin Sultan.

“We are touched and amazed by the wonderful turnout for the show,” said Suseela Menon, AIM Malaysian-Indian 2013 organising committee joint chairman.

Also present were Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) chairman Norman Abdul Halim and joint chairman AIM Malaysian-Indian 2013 organising committee Datuk Freddie Fernandez. Outside the industry heavyweights, the awards night was also about the partying and putting on a show to remember.
